Public Speaking Showcase Event

Wed, 11 Dec 2019

On Monday this week, the Academy was delighted to host a Showcase event for seven of our Year 10 students who have completed a course in public speaking. The event was the culmination of a 10-week programme which has helped the students learn how to plan, structure and deliver a speech, whilst developing their confidence in speaking in front of an audience. Students also learnt how to give feedback to their peers in a positive and constructive way, as well as improving their body language to present themselves with poise and conviction. Olivia M said, “I feel the programme has definitely developed my confidence, as I wouldn’t have been able to stand up in front of an audience before”.

The programme was set up as part of the Academy’s careers programme and was supported by two industry mentors Sam and Kay, who worked each week with the students to develop their skills and confidence. During the Showcase, each student delivered a pre-prepared speech to an invited audience of students, staff and parents, showing off their expertise and receiving warm applause from an appreciative audience.

Very well done to all everyone who took part in the programme and to Sam and Kay who so generously gave up their time to encourage and motivate the students, each step of the way! The skills they have learnt will be invaluable for success in any future university or job interviews and are essential in the workplace. As Carlotta A described the impact, “It has helped me to take a look at a new career path, possibly in politics”.
