University Reading Lists

Reading is an important part of study at University. You will need to be able to locate useful reading materials for your course and you may also need to develop certain reading skills to help you find the information you need quickly and effectively.

Once you have ‘firmed’ your preferred university course, you may well be signposted to a course reading list which you will be asked to read IN ADVANCE of starting your course.

What is a reading list?

At university, students may receive reading lists consisting of 30 or 40 books, journal articles or other kinds of reading relevant to a particular course. Reading lists usually provide background reading in a subject area as well as relevant literature for course assignments.

Whilst you will not be expected to read all of the items on a reading list, you will need to be able to select what is useful to your own needs, and decide in what order to read it.

How will I know what books and articles I need to read?

Some universities will provide a reading list through their VLE (virtual learning environment) or via a platform such as Moodle.  If there is no reading list provided, you can check the subject reading guide provided in the University’s online library.

I haven’t been given a reading list, what can I do to prepare?

Thomas Telford School staff have provided some suggested reading, by subject area, to help you prepare for your university studies.  We recommend that you work your way through the resources provided in the area directly linked to your University course.
