A broad and balanced curriculum creates flexible pathways for individual students to achieve the best they can and establish a positive career route. Students’ experiences are geared to develop their strengths, aptitudes and interests.
A full curriculum is provided that follows the National Curriculum programmes of study. This leads to both academic and vocational qualifications in Key Stage 4 where all students follow a mixture of courses. "The Academy is continually refining the curriculum on offer to students at both Key Stages 3 and 4 to ensure that the needs and interests of all students are fully met".
The National Curriculum seeks to give all secondary students a broad education, which includes vocational courses and helps to establish a clear career path.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8) When children come to the Academy, we place them in broad ability bands which are set by ability. Students with low literacy levels on transfer from primary school will undertake the Ruth Miskin Synthetic Phonics programme to ensure literacy levels reach a minimum standard allowing them to be successful learners.
All students are taught English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, Religious Studies, Design & Technology, PE, Performing Arts, Art, Personal, Social & Health Education, Citizenship and Information Communication Technology.
Students are able to start option subjects in Year 9 Students have a statutory right to withdraw from Religious Studies if the family wishes for this to happen.
Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 and 11)
All students continue to take English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science and a Humanities subject.
Students then have further options to choose from including Hospitality & Catering, Construction, ICT/Computing, Hair & Beauty, Product Design, PE, Dance, Art, Music, French, Spanish, Business, and Health & Social Care. Every attempt is made to tailor the courses on offer to suit the students' needs.
